POSITION TITLE: Métis Patient Support Worker

DEPARTMENT: Health, Mental Health and Addictions (HMHA)

CLASSIFICATION: MGO-05

SALARY RANGE: Starting at $58,366.00 per Annum

POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Temporary Term (Until March 31, 2029)

LOCATION: Prince Albert

ACCOUNTABLE TO: HMHA Program Manager

Brief Overview:

The Métis Patient Support Worker role supports Métis patients within hospital settings by promoting culturally safe care and helping individuals navigate complex healthcare systems. The position provides advocacy, emotional and practical support, and connections to Métis Nation–Saskatchewan programming and community resources. Métis Patient Support Workers will work closely with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, The First Nations and Métis Health Services Branch to improve the experience and outcomes for Métis individuals and families.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide person-centered, trauma-integrated support to Métis patients and families in the hospital.
  • Support in creating culturally safe environments for Métis patients and families.
  • Advocate for the well-being of Métis patients while supporting equitable access to health care services.
  • Support Métis Patients in navigating healthcare systems, including care plans, referrals, and discharge planning.
  • Aid in building respectful relationships with Métis patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Facilitate referrals to Ma Faamii, Medical Travel Assistance Program (MTAP), and external resources.
  • Identify barriers impacting Métis patients' care and work collaboratively to support the best outcome.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Métis culture, values, identity, and the experiences of Métis people within a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of healthcare systems and hospital protocols.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation, such as case notes and monthly statistics.
  • Understanding of cultural safety, trauma-informed, and patient-centered approaches to care.
  • Effective system navigation and advocacy skills to support Métis patients in accessing care and addressing barriers.
  • Knowledge of the Métis social determinants of health.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment in sensitive situations.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively use Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, Indigenous Studies, Human Services, Community Health, or a related field.
  • A combination of post‑secondary education and a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in healthcare settings, Indigenous service delivery, or patient advocacy may be considered.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with Métis or Indigenous communities and/or healthcare systems is preferred.
  • Experience in hospital or acute‑care settings is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in Indigenous Languages is an asset.


Additional requirements:

  • Must undergo a Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector
  • Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access reliable transportation
