In the Plumber/Steamfitter role, you’ll be working on installation, fabrication, troubleshooting, and maintenance of critical piping systems that support research, operations, and decommissioning in a truly unique industrial environment. What will you be doing!

  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting on piping systems and associated mechanical equipment to support site infrastructure and research facilities.
  • Constructing and installing piping systems and related equipment, including cutting, fabricating, fitting, and safely removing piping or components when required.
  • Executing decommissioning tasks on piping systems and equipment, ensuring hazards are removed in a controlled and compliant manner.
  • Reading and interpreting drawings, work packages, and technical documents to fully understand job scope and ensure adherence to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) requirements and applicable codes.
  • Interpreting maintenance records and route sheets, signing off on required documentation in alignment with quality control standards.
  • Maintaining clean, organized, and safe work areas, tools, and equipment in accordance with provincial, federal, and CNL regulations.
  • Attending safety meetings, reporting safety concerns, and applying CNL’s Event Free Tools throughout daily work.
  • Assisting in the training, coaching, and mentoring of trainees and apprentices, including demonstrating techniques, supporting skill development, and providing feedback on performance.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Secondary school diploma.
    • Qualification as a Plumber/Steamfitter, typically obtained through completion of a 9,000‑hour apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (CSA B51.1, ASME, NFPA).
    • Ability to use and endorse Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    • Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings and cross‑reference them with parts lists.
    • Skilled in operating standard shop tools, portable power tools, calibration equipment, and machine tools safely.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills for working with multi‑trade teams.
    • Ability to perform troubleshooting to ensure safe operation and continuity of production.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Working schedule: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day, for a 40‑hour work week (4×10).
  • Work involves physical activity and may include exposure to:
    • varying temperatures
    • confined spaces
    • heights
    • radiation environments
  • Must be physically fit and able to don/doff PPE.
