As a Decommissioning Specialist, you will play a vital role in planning and executing large, complex decommissioning projects within CNL’s Facilities Decommissioning portfolio. You will help ensure work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory and quality requirements—supporting CNL’s mission to responsibly decommission legacy nuclear facilities and protect the environment.

What will you be doing!

Planning, coordinating, and delivering decommissioning work packages within the Facilities Decommissioning portfolio
Ensuring technical deliverables meet project quality objectives and are completed on schedule and within budget
Interfacing with design teams, operations engineers, technical specialists, and field staff to obtain and integrate technical input to meet project and client requirements
Identifying, assessing, and initiating changes to approved designs, scope, schedules, and budgets in accordance with formal change‑control processes
Providing oversight of field implementation activities, including performing field walkdowns to verify facility status against approved plans
Participating in and/or leading pre‑job and post‑job reviews to support safe and effective execution
Coordinating and monitoring services provided by external suppliers and contractors
Conducting contractor oversight to ensure deliverables meet project requirements and applicable codes and standards
Traveling to external supplier or contractor locations, as required, to support project execution
Performing other duties as assigned by your manager

What we are looking for:

Education

Bachelor’s (Honours) degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a university of recognized standing
Membership in a provincial professional engineering association

Experience

Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant engineering experience
Experience working in a nuclear operational or decommissioning environment
Experience with technical procurement processes, including supplier qualification reviews, bid evaluations, and review and acceptance of technical deliverables
Proven experience providing contractor oversight during planning, development, and execution of work packages

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong logical and analytical thinking skills to solve complex technical problems
Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing competing priorities and regulatory requirements
Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to gather, analyze, and synthesize complex information
Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications in paper or electronic format
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications and formal document control processes
Demonstrated knowledge of engineering codes and standards used in the design, construction, and commissioning of nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities
Sound knowledge of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, and other relevant codes and standards
Familiarity with safety regulations, radiation protection principles, measurements, and contamination control relevant to decommissioning activities

Security Clearance Eligibility Required
Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), requiring a minimum of three to five years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom.
CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s Standard on Security Screening and Policy on Government Security.

Working Conditions:

Combination of office‑based and field‑based work
Periodic work in active decommissioning and industrial environments
Working schedule: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week.

Location: Fully Onsite

This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee. Located in the heart of the Ottawa Valley, our Chalk River site offers a beautiful natural setting with forests, lakes, and wildlife, right at your doorstep.
