Career paths · Skilled Trades
Trades pay well, hire everywhere, and don't need a degree. You earn while you learn. CanCareer helps you get sponsor-ready, approach the right employers, and work toward your Red Seal.

Trades are for everyone. Dedicated supports exist for women, newcomers (including foreign-credential recognition), and Indigenous apprentices across Canada — and demand means employers are hiring widely.
What makes this sector different
The trades are the one path where you get paid to train. Here's how the apprenticeship works, and the credential that lets you work anywhere in Canada.
You are hired and start earning from day one. CanCareer helps you approach union locals and employers to find a licensed sponsor.
About 80% of your apprenticeship is paid, on-site work toward certification. Your hours count toward your journeyperson status.
During in-class blocks you typically claim EI (~55%) of insurable earnings. A $400/week federal top-up was proposed for 2026–27.
Finish your hours, then write the Red Seal exam for interprovincial certification. A $5,000 completion grant was proposed for 2026–27.
Benefit amounts ($400/week, $5,000) are proposed (Team Canada Strong, 2026–27) and not yet claimable; the existing in-class support is EI. Verify current programs at Canada.ca.
Two routes to a sponsor: a union local (hiring hall) or a non-union (merit-shop) employer — CanCareer helps you get ready for, and approach, both. We help you keep your hours and tickets in one place and prep for the Red Seal.
